Lindsey Graham was appointed as an officer in the United States Air Force shortly after graduating in 1982. He quit the military after four years of active duty in Europe and returned to South Carolina. However, he continued his military career by joining the South Carolina Air National Guard in 1989. After serving in the regular army for six years, Lindsey Graham then joined the United States Air Force Reserve. In 1998, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel. He served in the military (air force) for 33 years before retiring at the usual retirement age of 60.
